Anyways, to continue:Īs Mulan is looking back, she is reminiscing her life, and thinking to the great lengths her parents raising her to the point she is at now. Hence, by leaving her village for a purpose, she wishes to have a more pure idea what she was destined for.
I read Xialou Guo’s “Nine Continents” and she talks in her book that her mother’s name was basically translated to the “wife of Guo”, and didn’t have that sense of unique identification. Women were often referred to by their relationships with the closest male relative.
And historically, China has been highly misogynistic in the past. For the record, no woman to her knowledge has successfully been able to live out the roles of the other gender. With the 2nd and 3rd line, it seems that she is looking to the past she left behind (her village, her life as a woman, and her family) and thinking how easier her life was laid out for her. In this stanza Mulan (I am assuming she is the speaker), recognizes that war cannot be paid without a price, whether it is economically paid, paid intrinsically with the deaths of people, or at the cost of your time, energy and strength. I think, as shallow they might be, they might be deeper in a wider sense of the song, especially with the culture talking about the crisis of identity and putting on a mask.
What I wanted to focus particularly in this post are primarily the lyrics of the song.
